It was not enough for James, however, to compile his millions and let that be that, he had a passion for his hometown of Dallas, Texas, and so he set aside three million dollars every year for the philanthropic efforts of the company. One of the recent examples of the generosity of Mr. Dondero and his investment firm is the one million dollar donation he recently gave to the Dallas Zoo so that they could start rebuilding their long-lost hippo habitat. In 2001, the management at the Dallas Zoo had to make the difficult decision to close the habitat after their eldest hippo, Papa, died of old age. Now, thanks to the help of James and several other philanthropists in the area, the Dallas Zoo guests can enjoy visiting two young hippos in the new Outpost enclosure!
